Dramatic win for Black Caps

New Zealand secured a dramatic and controversial one-wicket victory over England in the fourth ODI.

The result at The Oval leaves the Black Caps 2-1 ahead in the five-match series, with the final game scheduled to take place at Lord's on Saturday.

The tourists' chase of 246 for victory started badly as the fit-again Ryan Sidebottom got rid of both Brendon McCullum (1) and Ross Taylor (6).

Jamie How and Scott Styris steadied the ship, before the former fell for 37, chipping a return catch back to off-spinner Graeme Swann to leave the total on 83-3.

Swann then got rid of Daniel Flynn for just 12, bringing Jacob Oram to the crease to join Styris, who was dropped three times as he brought up a valuable half-century.

James Anderson dismissed Oram for a quickfire 38, inducing a top-edged hook shot to the waiting substitute fielder at deep square leg to put England in control, and it was 178-6 when Styris was run out for 69, having hit eight fours from 87 balls faced.

Black Caps skipper Daniel Vettori made just six before he fell to his England counterpart Paul Collingwood, before Grant Elliott was controversially run out for 24.

Elliott (24) collided with bowler Sidebottom as he set off for a quick single and was yards short of his ground as the bails were removed at the non-striker's end, with the New Zealand players visibly angry at the dismissal.

Tim Southee perished for six, being run out in more conventional fashion, but Kyle Mills made 25 not out to keep his side in the hunt.

Number eleven Mark Gillespie then emerged as the hero of the hour, as he struck the last ball of the match to Swann at cover. The fielder's throw missed the stumps and went for an overthrow to give New Zealand a dramatic win.
